“Speech less – Act more” aims to give young people between 18 and 30 years old an opportunity to meet each other across borders in Lommel, Belgium, to discuss personal, cultural and international issues related to human rights, more in particular the freedom of speech.

From 19-28 August, 30 young people from Belgium, Macedonia, Germany, Slovakia and Estonia will visit the German War Grave cemetery for 1 constructive week of workshops and activities. The young participants will demonstrate how friendship can bring different cultures together and help not only the young generation, but also the European community to face the conflicts of the past and work for peace in the future.

The aims of this project are first to involve youngsters with fewer opportunities, because our experience is to bring youngsters from different social, economic and cultural background together.

  • First of all is to give everybody a chance to take part in an interesting and fun week with the peers.
  • Secondly, to teach everyone, to work in cooking, doing the dishes together and that everybody is equal, such as pointing his/her its own personality.
  • Third is to show the local community of Lommel (and Limburg – by media papers) that these teens (who often are misunderstood, underestimated…) don’t deserve a negative reputation.
  • Fourthly, we want to discuss, debate, work around the freedom of speech because of the current affairs today: about world politics (Trump, Erdogan, Brexit,…), migration due to wars (refugees), but also to link it to the past (the cemetery). And this to raise awareness about their own opinion, responsibility and personality.
  • Fifth, we will connect to the earlier themes to glass art and poetry/the spoken word. As a sounding board, but also as a mirror for their feelings and opinions.

Program

During the exchange, we will discover the history of the war grave cemetery and her dead, speak to a WWII survivor and refugee, go into a debate with Amnesty International and visit the European parliament in Brussels.

We will also organise some group bonding activities like a bike ride through Lommel city, and the ”blotevoetenpad”. Everything will happen through open and good communication, where 1 leader chosen will organise and motivate the youngsters.

As a result, we aim to create some inspiring and instructive “Glass art”, connected to the spoken word (poems/theatre) about the exchange. We hope that the youngsters understand the advantage and necessity of international, European and intercultural dialogue for a peaceful and conscious world!
