Good governance for the European Union is one of the conditions for a successful federal Europe. The individual member states have passed on more of their traditional powers to the European level. But elected officials have to be able to exercise power on the European executive branch, and citizens have to play a role, get involved, and be heard.
Some essential questions have to be answered, of course, at the European level, not to mention at the global level (environmental issues are the best example). But this “large-scale governance” must be in concert with the region, at the local level, which is undoubtedly the right place to start for development that is really sustainable.
