History

  • The Council for the Future of Europe is a think tank, established in September 2011, initiated and supported by the Nicolas Berggruen Institute as one of its projects
  • The NBI “Future of Europe Project” aims to respond to the European political and economic crisis.
  • The Council for the Future of Europe gathers together a small group of Europe’s most eminent political figures to propose solutions and ideas for Europe.

Organisation/collective objectives

  • Recommend a way forward to the EU
  • Lobby for that course at the European Commission, the Council and Parliament as well as with the leaders of individual members states

Main activities

  • dissemination of Members’ publication of proposals and analysis
  • lobbying activities

Vision of Europe

  • Since the Treaty of Lisbon entered into force, the historic project of European integration has stalled. The absence of common political will on the continent to successfully resolve Europe’s sovereign debt crisis has led to a crisis of governance in the EU itself.
  • To resolve this current crisis of governance, should Europe move forward boldly toward a full federal union, complete with a common foreign and immigration policy, a popularly elected president and federal taxation?

Strong points

  • Founding members of renown
  • Lobbying the EU institutions to convey new solutions to the crisis in Europe
