AFEM is a european federation under French Association law (1901), established in Paris and gathering people and non profit institutions of Southern European Countries. It enjoys participatory status in the Council of Europe. AFEM was elected member of the Liaison Committee, a body representing the Conference of International Non Governmental Organisations, the fourth pillar of the CoE. It is entitled to lodge collective complaints for violations of the European Social Charter, according to its additional protocol.

Created after the 4th World Women Conference organised in Pekin by the United Nations in september 1995, it aims to support the construction of a democratic and social Europe, based on human rights. To this end it continues an ongoing dialogue with the institutions of the European Union and Council of Europe, national public authorities in the countries where it operates and organisations of civil society.

The expertise shown by its actions and their effectiveness, which is mainly due to the effective collaboration of the AFEM with EU institutions and its ability to mobilise other NGOs and international, European and national actors, is widely recognised and appreciated at both national and European level.
