ABD Welfare and Development Association is a NGO that defends the rights of people in a socially fragile condition. For more than 30 years we have focused all our efforts on generating personal autonomy and social coexistence through principles such as ethics, proximity and quality. We believe in a fair society which eradicates inequalities and social exclusion. Where every family and children have the same opportunities, where women and men can live in real equality, and the elderly and dependent people or those with functional diversity may have a dignified life. We believe in a future in which the young -and the not so young- use drugs in a conscious and critical way, where there are no evictions and the right to housing is respected, but also the right of asylum; we wish to host migrants and refugees so that all of us can live with equal opportunities, regardless of our cultural background.
We are dedicated to assist people in their life paths, preventing situations of fragility and attending social needs. We work with and for the people. We believe in their abilities and potential to fulfill their own needs and aspirations and it is essential for us to create opportunities and relationships that enable them to develop their own lives with confidence. The ultimate purpose of our social services is to achieve the respect of human rights, the promotion of democratic values, ethical strengthening of the civil society and constant attention to users and their relatives in all procedures and programs, considering them not only as recipients but also as active agents of change. In the process of pursuing our objective we always remain true to our values; ethics and transparency, professionalism, creativity and innovation, respect and coexistence & social responsibility
Our main activity covers 12 different areas:
Our impact was made possible by the work of an interdisciplinary team of more than 2,605 professionals in the social and health care sector, and an intervention model that keeps the participation of civil society in all its actions: 440 people participate in volunteer services of ABD, taking part in 68 different platforms promoted by third sector organizations or public administration throughout the territory in which we participate.
ABD has managed to position itself as a worldwide reference in civil society organization. We are a model association at the vanguard of the third sector characterized by:
All our results are possible due to sticking with the following key elements of our intervention:
In order to strengthen people’s personal autonomy, they need to get involved with their social environment. A process of inclusion and self-improvement does not only depend on each person and their capacity to overcome a difficult situation, but also on the opportunities they are offered by their community. This is why we empower people by getting them involved in their interests and relationships.
Our social initiatives start the moment we identify that specific needs affect specific groups of people. We cannot act individually since these difficulties are not individual.
Each of our programs and services demand the participation of citizenship and we try to achieve so by promoting a socially committed coexistence, launching campaigns to raise awareness, developing a sense of common responsibility and taking part in public spaces where political decisions are taken.
As an alternative to an increasingly unfair economy that causes great inequalities, we present our organization as a social and economic model, non-profit-making, transparent and focused on people and their communities. A sensible, more responsible economic management guarantees the reinvestment of profits in programs and services which are as innovative as necessary.
