The European Federation for Intercultural Learning (EFIL) is the umbrella organisation of 22 AFS Organisations in Europe. AFS (formerly American Field Service) is a non-profit volunteer based educational organisation offering educational exchanges for young people around the world.
The Members of EFIL are voluntary, non-governmental, non-profit organisations providing intercultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world.
EFIL Member Organisations participate in a network of 51 partner organisations with operations covering 80 countries worldwide.

Objectives

– EFIL contributes to peace and justice in a diverse world threatened by inequity and intolerance, by promoting intercultural understanding and sensitivity among European and other countries, organisations and citizens,hereby endorsing the objectives of AFS.
– Be a competent partner in Europe in the educational field, with substantial expertise and experience in intercultural learning.
– Actively help Members to operate within the European environment and to develop their organisations.

Main Activities

As a Federation of European AFS organisations, EFIL’s role is defined by the needs of its Members.
It therefore operates in the context of the AFS Strategic Plan that the AFS world wide network defined at its 2000 World Congress in Brussels.
Types of activities:
-International exchanges / stays.
-Training.
-Lobbying.
-Fundraising.

Strengths

– A federation which is the relay between the national organizations and the world wide ASF network.
– EFIL makes young people travelling all around Europe; the stays are considered as intercultural lessons and not only linguistic ones.
